Excited me! (with a dash of pride)

May 25, 2024

I’m SUPER HAPPY to report that I’m loving the comprehensive Fierce Freethinking Fatties Feed. This is me totally going on about my own creation. And, yes, pride is a terrible color on me. But I don’t care!

Why am I so willing to be full of myself? I hadn’t heard of the new sitcom “Mike & Molly” staring the amazing Melissa McCarthy (of Gilmore Girls fame)…until I saw two post about the show on the feed!

Riots Not Diets half liked the idea of the show. Big Fat Blog felt sick after reading the premise. And I totally get their reservations…but I like me some Rom-Com fluff. So, I’m very much looking forward to seeing the first episode.

You deserve much, much more than a pat on the back. The comprehensive feed is going to be a game-changer. It will provide options people in Fat Acceptance haven’t had before. It’s a spectacular achievement that you pulled off single-handed. No small feat, lady.

    Peace,
    Shannon

    I couldn’t agree with @atchka more. Elizabeth, you’re a rock star. :)

And as for that show, I have to say… it definitely piqued my interest and I love several of the actors. It’s probably gonna be like Drop Dead Diva for me, there are moments that annoy me… but there are more moments that I like so the good outweighs the bad.

Drop Dead Diva is frustrating for me. I LOVE the idea, hate the execution. For me, it’s completely about the bad writing. The cliches and the heavy handedness with the message drive me insane.

But, I am also not a fan of the movie (or the starz show) “Crash” for those same reasons. I just tend towards a more subtle sensibility.

Okay, I’ve watched the preview now. I’m definitely of the half and half opinion.

It’s great to see actual, honest-to-goodness fatties on the small screen.

However, I have some issues (and I’ll try not to let my loathing of CBS cloud my judgment).

First, Overeaters Anonymous? Really? They couldn’t just meet in the produce aisle or at a bar? We have to emphasize the fact that the lead fatties are gluttonous fatties too?

I liked the scene with Swoosie Kurtz eating the cake and Katy Mixon on the butter churn… mainly because it’s a situation that fat dieters EVERYWHERE have experienced with their families.

These sorts of universal truths are a comedy goldmine and, in the realm of fatties, almost entirely untapped. Being fat does afford a different perspective and different experiences than thin people have. Some of those experiences that are directly tied to our weight can be funny without resorting to cliche and stereotypes.

Most of the jokes are of the latter type, though, like when the fat man breaks the table by leaning on it (although, in high school this happened to me at a mall food court with a stone-topped table… it was the first time I ever got arrested for fleeing the scene of a “crime”… in reality, the tabletop wasn’t bolted down properly and my finger was not snapped back).

I think the conversation between the cops seemed all right.

But nitpicking a preview is futile. We’ll have to wait for the real deal to come out to see whether the writer’s will choose dignity or disrespect.

    Peace,
    Shannon

I think over at Riots not Diets and Big Fat Blog, they were feeling the same frustration “why does it have to be about dieting?” And I definitely don’t relate with that part of the show.

One of the major problems I have with Drop Dead Diva (and, as a writer, I’ve been know to fall into this chasm of badness) is that its too much about fat issues. DDD comes off as heavy handed, at times. As a viewer, I like my entertainment first and with a sprinkling of message.

My hope is that “Mike & Molly” will tap into some truth, in a similar way to the BBC show “Fat Friends.” But, there is the real possibility that the show could suck. I reserve the right to hate it, after I’ve had a chance to watch more than a preview.
