The 300 Club

March 15, 2024

To a lot of concern trolls, and general fat-shamers, 300 pounds is that magic number where being fat turns from a little yucky to full-out gross-fest. It’s the weight where it requires the local fire department to hoist your ass out of bed with a crane. It’s the weight that prevents you from doing any sort of walking. It’s the weight where life as we know it ends.

I realize there are people out there who won’t physically function their best if they weighed over 300 pounds; however, a lot of other people who are in this weight range manage to function just fine. Yours truly just happens to be one of them:

No hoverlift required.

I worked a physically-demanding job as activities assistant at a nursing home for almost five years, as I mentioned in Atchka’s latest post; I’ve walked all around New York City for an entire day more than once; I go to dances; I sang karaoke in front of drunk crowds who could have ridiculed me about my weight (but never did); I swim; I just live life.

Of course, being 300 pounds and up isn’t without those little annoyances (like trying to find clothes when you’re not ready to wear polyester pants with lines going down the legs or flowered muumuus). And society does love to assume you’re one french fry away from the grave or that the only jobs that you are mentally suited to are so-called menial and/or blue collar positions, most of which are very physically demanding and taxing on the body (there’s the exercise that us able-bodied fatties aren’t apparently doing, so there).

If you’ve never been over 300 pounds, I can see why it can be a very scary place. Society paints a devastating picture of what life is like once you’ve gone to the edge of the scale, so to speak. But I’ve been in this club since my late 20s and I’m 36 now. I’ve managed to survive relatively unscathed so far, and so have others who are older than myself. Weight is only a number. It should never be used as an indicator of health, moral value or likability.

Depeche Mode once said back in 1986 that people are people. This person writing this post just happens to be over 300 pounds (somewhere between 360 and 370, but, hey, who’s counting)?

Yay for the 300 Club!!! I’m another member of that club, have been for over 30 years now (still don’t need a crane to get me out of bed and haven’t needed a forklift to get me out of the house yet).

300 is my kind of number! I’m nowhere near the coffin! I don’t smoke, rarely drink, exercise by walking daily, eat nutritious foods (gee this fatty had a banana and glass of low fat milk for breakfast…what? no waffles drenched in heavy syrup and butter? GASP!)… I’ve been down the 300 path for quite some time. If you don’t like how I look, simply DON’T LOOK! ;-)

Welcome to Fierce Fatties, BxDW. But let me remind you that the reason you are still fat is not because bodies come in a natural variety of sizes and shapes, or that there are multiple environmental factors that can contribute to a person’s lifetime weight. It’s probably because you’re a non-compliant liar like Dr. Peter says, right? ;)

      Peace,
      Shannon

Love this post I’m in the 300 club and proud. I dont need a forklift to get my backside outta the house either. There are so many myths about being big thats why I set up my blog http://fiercefatandfashionable.blogspot.com I did this because I could not find any plus size fashionblogger that was anywhere near my size and shape. Plus fashion is nnot about size it’s about STYLE and how you work it Us big gals, bbw’s or however we choose to describe ourselves do not need the infamous muuumuu dresses or polyester horrors we can look dead glam and gorgeous. Hence the reason I am putting my face to this comment.

I’m a mere 200 pounds. My experience with those who are 300 pounds and are friends and relatives of mine, however, shows that 300 pounds is not the Life-Ending Number that the rest of society acts like it is. It’s kind of…weird, actually (then again, my own mom thinks that 200 is the Life-Ending Number. *LolSob*)

I am glad the internet gives folks over 300 to connect and create community. I wish there were more opportunities IRL to connect and commune. It is courageous to live unapologetically when over 300 (i am 405) and some days are easier than others. Up until I had a medical setback 5 years ago I was completely active and fit at 330. After the surgery my mobility was severely limited and I am learning how to embrace these limitations and get out and live my life. I am lucky to have survived and the truth is that my life is a blessing. I may not be able to move fast but I still can get around. Staying connected to folks who have my back against a world of folks who love to hate me because I take up too much space.

Fantastic post. I have been under, I have been over, at this point I have no concrete idea how much I weigh because I haven’t been on a scale in years, but since I’m wearing the same size clothes I’ve been wearing for years, I guess it’s safe to assume I’m still in the ballpark. I have always been a walker, never needed a cane or a forklift, I swim, I live life. Maybe 300 is the new 200? I dunno …. but I loved this post.

I myself about 3/4 of the way to the 300-pound club, although I still look like a member of the <200 club. 300 lbs. isn't what people think it is.

Wow, I’m a member of the club! Have been since I was 30 years old. I have always been able to find clothes though - I sew! And I know where to find the patterns that come in OUR sizes, too.
